Envious Casca by Georgette Heyer
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
After being majorly disappointed with WHY SHOOT THE BUTLER? I had kind of given up on Georgette Heyer but then found a lot of people talking about this and so gave it a go. Am glad that I did because it is quite enjoyable and though I guessed the modus operandi (and by extension the murderer) it is a decent locked-room mystery.
First Line: It was a source of great satisfaction to Joseph Herriard that the holly trees were in full berry.
I am still somewhat on the fence about Heyer – the few mysteries of hers I have read (BUTLER is one of them) did not make much of an impression on me but not read this so I shall persevere!

Glad you enjoyed this one, Neeru. Some of Heyer's novels are admittedly much better than others…

I discovered Georgette Heyer just last year when I read \”Friday's Child\”. I just loved the book and was surprised that I had not heard of Heyer previously. Later, I bought three of her other books from a used bookstore and found them to be a mixed bag. But, overall, I enjoyed them and really wanted to share my observations with you.I did not know that she wrote mysteries too. I will give this book a try.

Sergio, I had also given up on Heyer after that very disappointing BUTLER but after reading this, I'll at least finish the Heyer mysteries that are on my shelves.

Nitu di, I am very surprised that you heard of Heyer only last year. I remember it well when Parey had brought The Black Moth from Bhavan's library and both of us got hooked to this new author. Seems you must have left for Delhi by then.Since you enjoyed Friday's Child, here's a nice review of it:http://yvettecandraw.blogspot.in/2013/02/fridays-forgotten-or-overlooked-books.htmlThe blog has many other reviews of Heyer's novels. Happy Reading.

I do like that opening line. 🙂 I'm a fan of Heyer's Regencies and her detective stories, so I'm not impartial. However, this is my least favorite of the whodunits, since I almost immediately knew who the killer was. I've tried twice to read this anyway, and twice I haven't gotten through it.But I did love THEY FOUND HIM DEAD, THE UNFINISHED CLUE, DEATH IN THE STOCKS and BEHOLD, HERE'S POISON. Absolutely top notch.

Thanks Yvette for the suggestions. I think I have two of them on my shelves. I might not enjoy Heyer's Regencies as much as I did once upon a time but I always enjoy your reviews of them:)
