The Summer of the Bear by Bella Pollen
My rating: 2 of 5 stars
Had it been 100 pages shorter, it’d have been a real engaging read; as it is, superfluous characters and irrelevant incidents mar the flow and make the book such a drag that finally I just wanted it to end. The younger daughter’s rebellion was also a bit difficult to understand. What did she have a grudge against?

So many books are like that, Neeru.. They could benefit from a good, solid editing. Still, it sounds as though there's the making of a strong story here.

I might enjoy this book if it was shorter. For some reason as I get older, I have a hard time starting long books.

The story would have been more powerful, Margot, had it (as you said) been edited solidly. As it is, it tends to drag.

Same here, Tracy. That's why I loved the Holly Roth books that I read recently – shorter than 200 pages. Lovely.
